A DAY OFF SPENT IN THE GARDEN AT 'CORE
WEDNESDAY 4:04 PM / AUG 21, 2002

This is your job: Eat perfectly ripe Mango, only, all day. Someone else will peel the rubbery skin off for you. You will be paid to do this. You need only show up. Sometimes, if you ever get sick, yes Sick of the Mango, you will be given Watermelon to cleanse your palate. Or/And Perfectly Ripe Avocado, to fatten you up. But then it's back to the Mango. Again, you will be paid, handsomely. Do you, occasionally, want your mango blended into drinkable-form? Management has decided that you can have that. That it will be okay for you to have that, and that we can make that happen. For you.

mom, these are smashed berries.

After coffee at the 'core, I went to visit friend Mark at modernlivingsupplies.com (site still under construction and we're definitely not done with the homepage yet) where we chatted and sat on some comfy barstools; then off to lunch w/ Sxx at Bonita. Lovely: a day off in the 'hood— like having a saturday in the middle of the week without that weekend pressure to partake in impressive leisure.

My parents are so nice that even when I rant on endlessly about streetstyle, they read all of it, and even claim to have enjoyed it.

A few of you wrote to tell how the Ring-Around-The (Ring-A-Ring-A) Rosey nursery rhyme was about the Black Plague... The Ring being a black ring which appeared on the skin circling around a 'bubon', which was a rosacea-like, budding, corpuscle-like (these aren't medical terms) globule on the skin, which also devoured the flesh (The body's TISSUE (tishoo?), ahem) which of course resulted in a stinky odor, thus folks carried flowers (Posies) around in their pockets to ward off the smell. Then they burned bodies, hence the Ashes. Which says nothing to the 'atishoo' term, does it?

Other nice people wrote to explain the French are actually saying "A tes souhaits", (meaning "to your hope", or "to your wishes", or something like "to your health") to us when we sneeze.

birds. On a Wire. But not a wire, more of a pole.

Did you ever wake up to someone calling you on the telephone and saying "Good morning. I'm calling from Newsweek....Oops, I mean THE SUN!" ?

Today I did.

Sharon and I were talking of sneezing. And saying "Bless you" or whatever one says in response. She said the French say something which phonetically comes out as "atissuay"... And she thinks maybe it's derived from the English nursery rhyme she knew as a kid, where they go: "atishoo, atishoo (sounds like: a tissue)... We All Fall Down." and then she said "you know that nursery rhyme?"
And I was like "um, yeah, but...,er, we don't say it that same way"

and then I said "how do you say it, again?"
And she said

Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosey
Pocket Full of Posies
Atishoo, Atishoo,
We All Fall Down!

And then I told her how, here in the States, we grew up singing

Ring around the Rosey
Pocket Full of Posies
Ashes, Ashes,
We All Fall Down!

...Wondering how that got morphed as it crossed the Atlantic. Interesting, huhn?

*No, it still hurts everytime we throw these away, several times a day.
